The Firerock Bridge Project will:

  • Remove the wooden pedestrian bridge over the Deschutes River downstream of the Archie Briggs Road bridge.
  • Remove the abandoned waterline between Firerock Road to, and including, the valve vault on the west side of the Deschutes River.
  • Remove and rebuild the staircase on the east side of the Deschutes River.
  • Restore the work area on the east and west riverbanks with native seeding and plantings.

     

     Overall schedule:

    • Now through mid-2026: engaging with neighboring residents, HOA
    • 2025: Permitting process
    • Early 2026: Hiring contractor
    • Summer/Fall 2026: Bridge and staircase removal
    • Summer/Fall 2026: Staircase reconstruction

Background

History

The bridge is believed to have been constructed in the mid-1970s by a developer to support a 6-inch-diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waterline that supplied potable water across the Deschutes River to the Rimrock West neighborhood. The waterline supported under the bridge deck is damaged and not suitable to be returned to service. The footbridge has been closed to the public since 2015 due to concerns regarding the structural integrity of the bridge.
